MailChimp Vs MailerLite ~ Free Email Marketing Tools for Small Businesses!

In this post, we want to look at MailChimp Vs MailerLite. These are both excellent email marketing platforms for bloggers and small businesses. They both offer free accounts for starters but with some interesting differences.

I hope by the end of this short comparative post, you are going to be able to make an informed decision. If you are just starting blogging and working on a low budget, I recommend not spending unwisely on any email marketing platform. The reason is that these two (and many others) offer incredible free features to allow you grow your business.

-> Take a quick move to MailerLite here and MailChimp here

MailChimp Vs MailerLite ~ Free Email Marketing Tools for small businesses!

1) MailChimp

MailChimp has been around and gaining the attention of many bloggers. One of the reasons is the free account of 2000 subscribers with 12,000 emails sent per month. No expiring trial, contract, or credit card required.

If all you do is publish blog posts and email your subscribers about the new post, this may be your choice to start with.

As a matter of fact, MailChimp has all you need to create and send beautiful mails and track subscriber activities (Open and Click Rates).

With MailChimp’s built-in signup forms, you are able to design your signup form so it suits your brand and matches your newsletter. It also allows you to create forms and collect subscribers on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and WordPress.

But here are some important limitations!

mailchimp vs mailerlite

No Automation or Autoresponder: If you are doing email marketing, you know that Automation and Autoresponders are key factors. These make transactional emailing possible. Well, some platforms I have used separate both terms into different features. But MailerLite as we will see below use both to mean the same.

If you are using MailChimp free, you don’t have access to Autoresponders. That means once someone signs up to your list, nothing happens. You can’t send an automated mail instantly or days after. You won’t even be able to shift subscribers from one list to the other automatically based on certain actions.

Affiliate Links and Affiliate Marketing

MailChimp treats these two different. Affiliate marketing is prohibited under their Terms of Use, but affiliate links are usually fine to use. So if you are into affiliate marketing, you’ll have to think again before taking on this choice.Β  For more on how they work with this, check out this post

MailChimp Vs MailerLite ~ For Bloggers

2) MailerLite?

Remember in this Mailchimp Vs MailerLite post, I’m just looking at some key differences on the surface. All things being equal, they both have powerful tools to ease your marketing.

MailerLite also has the free account option, no expiring trial, contract, or credit card required. The only key differences are with the number of subscribers and emails sent per month.

Basic Free account differences

MailerLite MailChimp
Number of subscribers 1,000 2,000
Number of emails per month Unlimited 12,000
Automation/Autoresponders YES NO
Auto Resend YES NO

From this simple table, you notice MailerLite gives you more room to grow your business. Considering Automation to be a key email marketing feature, this makes them more attractive and can be considered a good alternative to MailChimp.

But don’t celebrate yet…

If you want to send affiliate links in your emails, MailerLite may not be your choice. According to their terms of service, they don’t accept affiliate materials.

The best way to do affiliate marketing with MailerLite and MailChimp

We all know affiliate marketing is interesting but these tools don’t allow you to send swipe mails (for instance). If you use them however, I recommend you check out this post I wrote on three foolproof steps to succeed in Affiliate marketing:

  1. Get a copy of the product to promote.
  2. Share your results on your blog
  3. Create tutorial posts to educate your audience

Once you have done this, send mails to your list driving traffic to your affiliate product blog posts. Experience has proven this to convert better than driving traffic straight to sales pages.

MailerLite Vs MailChimp – Support Services

One of the things that attract customers to a company is their support services. No matter how great and stable your services/products are, your customers are often going to be facing issues.

How quick and qualified are your support staff?

That matters a lot.

MailChimp uses Emails and Phones

MailerLite uses Emails, Phones and Live chat, which makes a difference!

MailChimp Vs MailerLite

MailChimp Vs MailerLite ~ Price differences

Everyone starting a business hopes to grow. So while you begin on free account, one day you will expand over the limits. There will be need to upgrade. So which of these platforms allows you more flexible options that allows your growth?

Before I move on, note that with MailerLite, all pro features are available with the free account. The only difference is at the level of the size of your lists put together.

MailChimp Vs MailerLite

I think MailerLite has more friendly prices from the table above. And you have up to 30% OFF is you are paying yearly.

MailerLite’s Auto Resend Feature

This is a wonderful unique feature with MailerLite I will be giving details about soon (probably upcoming MailerLite Reviews) but I just want to mention it here as a core feature that makes it different from MailChimp. Most of the email marketing platforms I have used don’t even have this either. It’s a premium feature available with MailerLite Free Account.

MailChimp Vs MailerLite

This feature allows you to create two versions of a single campaign. The first version is sent to everyone on the list. The second is sent at a specific time to members who didn’t open the first version or who open but didn’t click.

It’s a unique and remarkable feature that can highly increase open rate and boost business. You will notice that it doesn’t just resend a carbon copy of the first campaign. The resent version can be different. You have options to change the subject line and even the message content.

Check out this example

MailChimp Vs MailerLite

Ok like I said, this is just a short post on MailChimp Vs MailerLite. I wanted to bring out just the core differences and allow you to make a choice. To be quite frank, they are all great free newsletter email software.

I tried both but currently going with MailerLite. It’s cheaper and has all I need to grow my business. The customer service is great, with support always available on live chat.

Let me know what you think about these two platforms in the comment box below.

  7. This is exactly what I’m looking for. MailerLite is amazing and I love its autoresponder. I’m just a newbie and I can’t affort to get a premium of MailChimp or other services like Aweber or GetResponse. But MailerLite solved all this. I just want to create the relationship with my readers so this is really good for me. Thank you so much.

    • Thanks for sharing your experience brother and I’m glad I’m able to help my readers get something that will help them.

I hope you are having a wonderful week

  11. Sir, you might not realize this but you just solved a major problem for me. I have been looking for something like for long time thanks.

  12. Hi Enstine,

Having used both platform for a reasonable time, I can confidently share my experience here.

My take is this, if building relationship with your subscribers really matters to your business as a starter who have little or no money to spend on email marketing services but will like to take advantage of free email services, Mailerlite is the ideal option.

There are lots of advantages the auto responder features brings to marketing that helps build strong bonds between the marketer and subscribers, which in my opinion Mailchimp deprive marketers using their free services.

Sometimes, we (marketers) might want to remind a subscriber exact days he has been on the list for some reasons, this is not possible with mailchimp because you can’t set up message to go out base on certain trigger or events.

But you can schedule message in Mailchimp to go out on a future date, but there is a problem to this too. Sometimes, the schedule message might not apply or make sense to your a day or a week subscribers, and going through the list of subscribers to find out what date or time someone subscribed so you know what message to send them might not be an easy task.

For now, I prefer Mailerlite to MailChimp despite 1,000 subscribers short of Mailchimp free services.

    Thanks for sharing.

I’ll be sharing my detail experience with Mailchimp and Mailerlite on the blog very soon too.

  13. This is a wonderful comparison and I am feeling happy because I am using mailchimp free version so far. As a beginner I think mailchimp is simply awesome and first 2000 subscribers is free. Thanks for this helpful article.

  14. Although Mailchimp supports 2000 free subscribers but it has lots of restrictions on other features. MailerLite looks better in terms of features it supports on free account. For new blogs, 1000 subscribers are good number to go.

I’m glad to know that they support automation on free account. Will give it a try.

  15. I would prefer MailChimp over MailerLite because it supports 2000 free subscribers whereas mailerLite only support up to 1000.

  16. Hi Enstine,
Great review of MailerLite and Mailchimp, I am personally using MailChimp for my blogs but as you explained, this is very clear that MailerLite is far better. I am going to try MailerLite.
    Thanks for this useful info.

  17. Thanks for Information about MailChimp Vs MailerLite. Your Article is impressive and very informative. I am now regular visitor of your website and bookmarked it.

  18. Hi Enstine,

Great review, I use MailChimp but after going through your review and comparison between MailChimp and MailerLite I will give MailerLite a try.

    • Hey Ernest,
Good to hear from you πŸ˜‰
Give it a try and let’s see how it goes.
If possible, share your results with us.

Thanks man and do have a wonderful week

  19. Hi Enstine,

I was a MailChimp user. I recently came to know about the MailerLite in a discussion and is trying it now. This review helped me get a few more points about MailerLite. Thank you for the interesting comparative review.

  20. Very informative blog post. Everything makes sense though. Keep up the good work ahead too. Really appreciate the effort.

  21. Hey Enstine.
Good comparism and write you’ve got here.

I tried checking mailerlite out almost immediately I finished ready this on the 10th of May, but till this very moment, the website has not been loading. That is for almost 24hrs in a roll.

Now, here is my take. No matter how cheap or awesome the features, pricing and benefits of any service is, it’s really not worth it when it become shear luck accessing your own account or data.

This type of downtime I have never experienced with mailchimp.

What is your take on this? I await your response.

    • Hey Bonire,
It’s strange what you are experiencing.
I never heard anyone having that issue. Isn’t that an issue with your ISP?

Did you try on different browsers?

  22. Hello Enstine,

I started using Mailerlite the very first day I realized you’ve switched to it.

You sent me an email with the subject “I’m quitting francis” on the 15th April. That was when I figured this simple tool .

I was wondering why you switched from INinbox. So I went ahead to sign up and was fortunate.

I encourage all to go for it. It’s a good email marketing software out there. No two ways about that.

Thanks for introducing me to it bro.

  23. Hi Enstine bro,
Nice review and like always you’ve brought a good tool in front of the bloggers.

Mailer lite is offering so much for free. Its a game changer since, autoresponder was something that was never free in the email marketing world. Not at least with the ones like Get Response of mailchimp.

I am trying them for sure.

  24. Hi Enstine!
Great comparism here, I have use the free version of MailChimp but has a lot of limitations.
From what you have said so far, I think Mailerlite is really a nice tool as it has unlimited email sending option and autoresponder even in the FREE package.
I am gonna give it a trial right away.

    – Emebu

  25. Hi Enstine,

MailerLite sounds like a great starter program for folks, but the affiliate regulations are a bit of a roadblock.

I agree that it’s best to send affiliate traffic to your blog posts first, but if someone does a lot of affiliate marketing they’re probably not creating review posts for everything they’d like to promote. So this would slow things down.

On the other hand, restricting affiliate marketing would probably help make the MailerLite service improve its deliverability rate, which, I’ve heard is not up to par with the big ones like MailChimp, GetResponse, Aweber etc.

The pricing is impressive and I’d like to recommend this to my newbie students and clients, but I’m still not sure if the emails are getting delivered sufficiently to offset the higher price of better seasoned and reputable services like GetResponse, etc.

I’d like to hear more about that as time goes on.

    • You are right Donna!
The folks at WF do a lot of Affiliate Marketing and drive traffic straight to the site. I also read of one guy who does big on JVzoo because he reviews every single product he promotes. I think his strategy really is good as it produces results. πŸ˜‰

MailetLite is relatively new and growing. With the DomainKeys/DKIM and SenderID/SPF settings, inbox delivery can really be improved.

Though I’m new on it, I’m carefully studying my results.

Thanks for making it another party today πŸ˜‰

  26. Hey Enstine,

This is the first time Ive heard of Mailer lite but it sounds like you’re getting a lot with the free version. I like the fact that it also has the autoresponder and autoresend feature. Plus the price is a lot cheaper than mailchimp’s paid prices.

Thanks for the introduction Enstine! Have a good one!

    • Hey Sherman,
As a matter of fact, the AutoResponder in the free version is what makes it even more attractive. I can see a rush for it πŸ˜‰

      Thanks for stopping by buddy

  27. Hey Enstine,

Good one here. Myself and partner uses Mailerlite for our new project and it works great for us. Simple interface, Lovely features made FREE and wonderful support.

    We heart the platform.

Nonetheless thanks for sharing with us.

    • Hey Babs,
      Thanks for sharing your experience.
You are right about it being simple and lovely. And it delivers to inbox.

      quite impressive isn’t it?

  28. Hi Enstine,

Perfect timing. I’ve been thinking of changing to MailChimp but now seeing that MailerLite might be the better option for me.

Thanks for giving the comparisons to make a better choice.

    • You can’t be wrong with MailerLite Monna. I like both the autoresponder and auto resend. Quite exciting features you’ll find there πŸ˜‰

Let’s know how it goes with you

  29. Hi Enstine,

MailerLite looks like a great alternative to MailChimp! I’m not a fan of MailChimp so I use MailPoet which resides right inside my WP Dashboard. However, MailerLite looks so good, I might have to give it a try! Thanks for sharing this with us!

    • Hey Bren,
I noticed you signed up to MailerLite. It’s a good thing to try so let me know if I can help.
The support team though is right there to give you a hand.

I’m sure you are going to enjoy the Auto Resend Feature πŸ˜‰

  30. I have been using Mailchimp for 3 months now and loved it. Of course that was until I came to know about MailerLite. The one thing that compels me the Auto Responder feature. It seems awesome and because its free and I dont do affiliate links, I think I must migrate. Is there a option to import links from Mailchimp to MailerLite?

    • Hey bro,
It’s quite easy to move your current list. Just export from MailChimp and import into mailerLite easily. You will find it a very easy step

  31. Insightful comparison,

I’ve tried mail chimp, but I have never heard of mailer lite. But according to your comparison it looks promising and worthy of trying.

I’m personally not a fan of mail chimp, simply because they don’t offer the free auto responder service and if you have a free account it is hard to get customer service.

Thanks for the info, i’ll definitely check mailer lite out.

    • Hey Stefany,
You will really like it, trust me. It’s quite impressive.
Once you signup, the support team can help you setup so quickly.

      Please share your results

  32. Hey, Enstine!

I’ve been using MailChimp free one but as Nisha laid out, it is missing some core features with its free package.

And the important one is the autoresponder.

Since I do not have a biggy email list and MailerLite is much better than MailChimp and of course in price as well; I am switching to it! πŸ™‚

Thanks for the great introduction to MailerLite! I wonder why we don’t search out so great tools the internet has for us? πŸ˜‰

    Happy to share!

    ~ Adeel

    • It will be good to see you on board this tool bro
Beside the autoresponder, you are going to fall in love with Auto Resend. Such a powerful feature that makes them stand out.

It is also another tool to make money with its affiliate program πŸ˜‰

  33. Great article and an insightful comparison.

I have tried mailchimp but have never used mailer lite and I think I should try it as well.

I am especially impressed with its auto resend feature, and yes it is a fact that this particular feature is not available with most of the email services. I’d love to read a detailed mailer lite reviews (as promised) on this and some other features of mailer lite.

  34. Hi Enstine!
I am also using MailChimp but that FREE account does not have autoresponder feature as you have laid it down.
Mailerlite is really nice as it has unlimited email send and autoresponder even in the FREE package. I am starting with MailerLite. Hope to go great with it…
How about the delivery in inbox in mailerlite?

    • Hi Nisha,
You won’t regret moving to MailerLite
They allow you to Authentication your domain with DomainKeys/DKIM and SenderID/SPF parameters so this hugely positively affects your inbox delivery.

Unlike MailRelay I used before with very bad inbox delivery, MailerLite deliver’s straight. But note that other factors (like the content of your campaign, subject line, etc) also count.

Let me know once you make your decision

  35. Hi Again,
I am Using MailChimp This is Great Responder Tool πŸ™‚ But Your Information is Fantastic Mailerlite Email Marketing Guides Keep Sharing πŸ™‚ and Good Work
    Have a Nice Day Ahead,

  36. Hi Enstine, I first heard about mailerlite from you and found out you were using it. I have been looking for a good autoresponder service for my new business and I found what I just needed.

I actually wanted to write you yesterday regarding this and fortunately, you made a comprehensive post about it.

Thanks. I’m signing up already through your link.

  37. Hi Enstine,

Nice comparison about MailChimp Vs MailerLite ~ Free Email Marketing Tools. Currently i am using MailChimp, but after analyzing the Plans of both Email Marketing services and auto resend feature I would like to say that MailerLite Is Better Then MailChimp.

    Thanks for fantastic share πŸ™‚

  38. Hey Estine,
Until now I was very happy with Mailchimp. But I gradually turn on to affiliate marketing and as I understand, Mailer-Lite seems more suitable for that. Specially the resend option is very usefull. thnx again.
    Hans van Zanten

    • Hey Hands,
The Auto Resend is the killer factor.
I did the first Auto resend post last Saturday. The resend was done yesterday Sunday and this morning, there was a new affiliate sale generated by that resend.

The resend got additional 5% Open Rate and still counting. Something quite impressive.

BTW, did you get to Jasper?

  39. Hi Enstine, thanks for sharing this information about the best email marketing system with comparison. I had used mailchimp but now it is outdated and there are lots of new service provider in the online industry.

Right now I am not using any or the available service for email marketing due to a contractual project I have signed with Govt Agencies. That is why I am blogging like a fluctuating tube light. πŸ˜‰

But once again thanks for this comparison and soon I will be trying this new one for my blog.

    Mohinder Paul Verma
BloggingFunda – A Community of Bloggers

    • Hi Paul,
Yes, the industry is getting too competitive now with many more awesome options. If mailchimp doesn’t do anything, they will be left behind.

Hope you are doing well with your project with Gov’t. Please be sure to come back to blogging soon πŸ˜‰

  40. Hi Enstine,

I am using MailChimp for a long time and it is great service to collect emails from subscribers at free of cost, but without using any freebies collecting emails is very difficult for bloggers.

If you want to offer freebie then you need to have an autoresponder service to send free information automatically to your new subscribers.

I too thought shifting to the premium version for this feature but after reading this information about MailerLite on your blog I felt very happy and I am going to use this service for this feature.

Thank you very much for sharing this information.

    • Hi Madhavi,
Thanks for sharing your experience. It will be good move to MailerLite. Beside the autoresponder, you will have access to other important features like the Auto Resend.

The support staff is always there to see you through any difficulties

  41. Hi Enstine,
Apologies for my recent absence but things have been hectic in our little Thai village as you probably realize after our recent problems with dengue fever outbreaks.

Many thanks for sharing this information as I although I am very aware of MailChimp the other system MailerLite was unknown to me.

Thanks also for the way around using affiliate links. As far as my blogging goes I am using GetResponse for my email marketing because of this very fact re affiliate marketing.

We actually have used the paid version of MailChimp with our handmade Thai silk business for many years and have found them to be excellent. We also sell associated products with our silk and not once have we had a problem with Mailchimp when we use links to these products in our regular newsletters – but in fact they are affiliate links as we get paid if people purchase these items.

Maybe because we are primarily a handmade silk manufacturer and not an internet marketing type site enables us to use affiliate links like this. We even approached MailChimp about this aspect of our busjness before we signed the affiliate agreement with this other silk manufacturer and they did not have any issues with us promoting these other silk items along with our handmade silk creations.

Thank you for this valuable share Enstine

Best wishes as always from the remote Thai village marketer

    • Hi Peter,
So good to see you here buddy.
      I have been absent from your blog as well for three stupid reasons;
      1 – Busy offline
2 – My PC went down so I had to get everything re-installed
3 – Some minor health problems

This week, I have some stuffs to add a money transfer app I did for a client. It may take a couple of days off. But I’ll be around though not as often.

Good to know things are better over there and that terrible fever dealt with. Hope everyone else is doing well.

I seldom send affiliate links in my mails so I didn’t really have any issue with MailerLite’s being hard on them. I don’t function like most guys at Warriorforums πŸ˜‰

MailerLite too has an affiliate program so like I shared in this post, I will be doing some tutorials. That way, I’m sure to make some more sales.

Thanks again for making it an appointment today. Do have a wonderful week ahead
