It’s almost the most beautiful time of the year! No, I don’t have Christmas on my mind when I say that. I am talking about Black Friday. Pre-Christmas sales are something the majority of Americans are looking forward to for the whole year. I’m sure you have seen the pictures and the videos or even experienced crowds camping outside of the store to make sure they are the first ones to get to an item they were waiting for. It’s not like that just in the United States really. A lot of European countries have hopped on the Black Friday train and people are going all out once the sales begin. You can buy Christmas presents for your whole family and friends and also treat yourself. That’s what I call a good time!
Black Friday is an informal name for the „holiday“which is the day after Thanksgiving. It is often the busiest shopping day of the year because it kicks off the holiday season. It could be said that people like Black Friday not just because of the sales, but also because of the holiday feeling it has. Since Christmas is soon after it and everything is probably already decorated, it radiates a cozy and warm feeling that makes you feel at home. According to the National Retail Federation, 84.2 million people shopped in stores on Black Friday in 2019, and 37.8 million people shopped in stores on Thanksgiving day. You can see how big of a difference that is.
In 2019 digital sales have seen an impressive surge because more and more people prefer to shop from the comfort of their own homes. According to Adobe Analytics, estimated sales for the full weekend, which is from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday, were over 29$ billion (in the US). That is 20% of total revenue for the entire holiday season, which was 19% the year prior. Also, the same research finds that Black Friday 2019 was the best year for mobile with over 2.9% billion in sales. You can read the whole article here.
Most retailers in the US started with the offers in the week leading up to Black Friday and made the deepest discounts on an actual day. Banana Republic for example opened with 40% off, while in the UK, Boohoo started off immediately with an up to 75% offer. Fast fashion retailers such as Zara and H&M had upped their game with deeper discounts. Zara in the UK offered a 40% discount which was 20% in 2018 and in the United States, 30% off for full collection turned into 50%. H&M on the other hand lowered the number of marked-down pieces, but the average discount percentage was 49% which is the highest number in the last two years. If you don’t know what is the smartest purchase to make on Black Friday, here are some suggestions. Electronics are always the safest bet and they sell out the fastest. They are heavily discounted so if you had your eye on something, especially Apple products, you might want to camp out your nearest electronics store. Then there are appliances, whose prices drop 40 to 50 percent. Winter wear is also smart to buy during Black Friday since the prices will drop dramatically. Sneakerheads and designer items fiends this is your time to shine! Sneakers and designer bags prices are most likely to be dramatically reduced.
