Skype Web Version ~ How to use Skype on your Web Browser!

Skype, one of the most used business tools now has a web version. That means you have nothing to download and install. If you have a Skype account, all you need is go to Skype Web version, enter your login info and you are in. Click here

The first time I tried this on Firefox, I had to download and install the official browser plugin that allows me to make video and audio calls. Once you login, the platform is going to guide you through.

I remember when WhatsApp mobile app chat tool went web too. There was an air of excitement among users. But the difference here is that your mobile phone will have to be kept connected to the Internet for the web version to function. If you didn’t know about using WhatsApp on your web browser, see the instructions here

Skype Web Version ~ The ease of communication

skype web version

One of the problems with a desktop application is the fact that you have to always carry the computer on which it’s installed along. This is a problem and Skype has understood it.

Again, once your operating system crashes or something bad happens to your machine, after repairs, you’ have to get the apps installed again. For licensed products, most often, you’ll have to call the developers to reset the license. This too has always been a serious pain.

Each time there is an update, you will have to download the changes and install. For people in areas of expensive bandwidth, this is a factor that affects cost.

But being on the web is easier…

I like it when I’m allowed to use the web option of an application. That means I’m never limited by space. I don’t even worry about what happens when my PC breaks down.

I can always access my account anywhere in the world. All I need of course is the Internet connection and a web browser.

I personally think the fact that Skype has gone web will open up for many more users. What do you think?

This is what the new Skype looks like and note that it’s still in beta:

For those of you who are heavy Skype users, you should test this out to find out if everything you have on the desktop version is available.

Three ways to use Skype

So there are now three different ways to use Skype;

  1. Desktop – You have to download and install
  2. Mobile – I use it on Android phone
  3. Web – This is most accessible to all. Nothing to download and install.

I have tested the web version on both Firefox (Version 47.0) and Chrome (Version 51.0) browsers and found compatibility issue. If you find problems on your own browser, please share in the comment box below.

Also let us know what you think about the new Skype Web Version. Does it make any difference? Are you even a Skype user?

Hey enstine,

I cam across this post in the SERP results. Such an awesome post, I was always a fan of the app version of the skype. I guess the web version is better.

Michael Fisher - June 10, 2017

Hi Enstine, This is my first time on your blog. I read quite a number of posts in a row and I must say I enjoyed it. Well, you might be thinking then why I am commenting particularly on this one.

I have been Skype user for at least 3 years now. I like to keep all my work oriented contacts on Skype.
I tried to swift to slack and asked my team to install slack on their machines and guess what? We weren’t at all enjoying it. I am not saying that it is bad but Skype was something that we were missing so now we are back on Skype.

Skype is really good messenger app and although I like to use Skype app on my Mac, some of my team members do use web version of it.

Hello Enstine,

That is top notch! I take advantage of Skype and have downloaded to my laptop. But, the net version appears high-quality! I hate downloading pointless matters so I may also just start the usage of the web alone. Thanks for sharing this with us!

Amandeep - July 20, 2016

Sometimes i use my friends lappy when mine one is not available. Now i don’t need to install Skype on my friend’s lappy to make calls.

dhanunjai - July 9, 2016

whenever sometimes my skype download version was struck then i use skype webversion which is a very good option for skype users because sometimes we have something urgent to communicate and when downloaded version got stuck then skype web version is good alternative for this.

Hi Enstine,
I always amazed with the range of new apps and software you provide to your readers.

As someone who is located in a remote geographical part of the world I’m a big user of Skype and looking forward to checking out this web version.

I followed the link you so kindly provided and it looks like I don’t have any compatability problems with my Chrome browser.

This is an awesome addition to my communication capacities so I’m most grateful to you for sharing this opportunity.

Always a pleasure to visit your place Enstine.

Best wishes from the remote Thai village marketer

Hi Enstine,

This is great! I use Skype and have downloaded to my pc. However, the web version seems awesome! I hate downloading unnecessary things so I may just start using the web alone. Thanks for sharing this with us!

    Enstine Muki - July 4, 2016

    Hi Bren,
It’s often a bore to download updates each time you open an app. The web version takes away that πŸ˜‰

So far, how is it going with you?

Donna Merrill - July 1, 2016

Hi Enstine,

I’ve used Skype on both Mac and PC. I find it works better on my PC…no glitches! But I haven’t tried it on my phone. Hmmm now that would be awesome so I wouldn’t have to carry around my laptop.

I do find there are updates so many times using Skype but so far so good..I haven’t crashed yet lol.

    Enstine Muki - July 4, 2016

    Hey Donna,,
Never tried on MAC. Never even used MAC before πŸ˜‰
But I think the web is even better. No restrictions.

Will be good to know how it goes with you. Good luck and have a wonderful week ahead

Well, since I have Skype already installed on my phone and computer, I think I will continue to use those. However, with Messenger and Whatsapp, these days I hardly use Skype. It just exists you know!

    Enstine Muki - June 30, 2016

    Hi Tim,
Good to see you here and thanks for taking time to drop a comment.
Yeah the chat industry is getting competitive but Skype stands out in many cases. I like that you are able to Skype out or even share live screens.

Well, I’m not a power user of any of these though πŸ˜‰

Hi Enstine,

Your post about Skype solves a bit of a mystery foe me! I hardly ever use Skype but I had occasion to the other day and suddenly found myself on their web site and didn’t know what was going on.

I was in a bit of a hurry, so I just shut it down, but now I know it’s official I’ll pursue getting it started again as I have another Skype call to make soon and the web version would be far preferable.

Thanks for explaining what was going on πŸ™‚

Saurav Kumar Nayak - June 30, 2016

Hi Enstine,
I have learnt a new feature of Skype by reading your post.
Surely Skype is the best tool to make Video calls, audio calls and instant messaging. Skype helps to connect people who are mile away.
We all know these features of Skype that’s why it is most used tool for video calling. Apart from video calling it has numerous features like Group Calling, Multiple Chat windows and screen sharing.
These are the features which all know. But it also includes features like Editing recent sent message, hiding typing status, customising name to your contact, backup of chat history and transferring contact from one account to another.
I was overwhelmed to know that it has Web version too. The installed version of this tool in Desktop make it complicated to use.
Through this feature we will able to use it any place.

Thanks for wonderful information.
With regards,

    Enstine Muki - June 30, 2016

wow! You are really a Skype power user Saurav.
You have to find out if the web version too has all the features.

And if that’s the case, it would be very powerful πŸ˜‰

Tola Korede - June 30, 2016

Yes, this is good news indeed and also Skype gone web will open up for many more users.

I try out now.

Thanks for sharing.

Yogesh Shinde - June 30, 2016

Hi Enstine,

This is certainly a good option. Handy for people who don’t want to install the desktop client. The web version is actually the best of both worlds (mobile and PC).

Efoghor Joseph - June 28, 2016

Enstine, thanks for this timely post. I use Skype a lot; but sometimes, there are issues with loading the application, and having to switch between your browser and the tool. But with this web-based version, I want to believe that the issue of speed won’t arise.

I have not used the web version before, but I hope to visit the site immediately and try it out to see what prospects it offers.

Thanks once again for this post. Do have a lovely day.

    Enstine Muki - June 30, 2016

    Hi Joe,

Hello Enstine Sir,

Haroun - June 28, 2016

I always had trouble with the browser version of Skype but perhaps its more stable now. I hope so anyway, because Skype is a great online business resource for me.

    Enstine Muki - June 28, 2016

    Hi Haroun,
Does it have to do with the version of your browser?
I’m currently on Firefox and seeing no issues.

Maybe it depends on the functions one is using too. I’d like to know how it goes πŸ˜‰
